We are absolutely thrilled with A Step Ahead Private Tutoring! Our daughter has been a student for almost two years and is currently making straight A’s in school thanks to Dr. Pittman. She makes learning fun and enjoyable while at the same time teaching valuable skills in a special way that our daughter can understand and apply at school. Dr. Pittman always communicates with the parents and teachers to cover any areas of concern! Not only have we seen her grades improve, but her confidence and attitude have improved as well.

In 2006 my then 8th grader had been struggling with reading comprehension and spelling all through school. He excelled in all other areas but I spent much time re-reading with him at home what his class had read in school. I also spent time and money looking for the audio version of what his class was reading. I had him tested twice for learning disabilities and even set up an IEP for him to make accommodations at one point but nothing seemed to truly help. Desperate for answers, I turned to searching the internet for tutoring help. I sent many e-mails and researched many websites. Mrs. Pittman from A Step Ahead contacted me immediately. I could tell from our phone conversation that she was poised and professional. She suggested that we meet first to discuss the concerns I had for my son and so that she could tell me about herself, share her credentials and what her plan would be for tutoring my son. After meeting with her I knew in my heart that she was the perfect fit for my son’s situation. She spent about 4 months (twice a week) working with my son. She was able to give him the tools he needed to be able to decipher what he was reading. She also worked with him on how to better put what he was reading down on paper in a creative and informative format. Even more important, she instilled in him a confidence that has carried him into the private high school he is now attending. He is excelling academically including taking honors courses in math, science and social studies. His English teacher recently told me that she thought he should consider taking honors English next year!
About the time my older son was ready to move on academically without additional tutoring it was becoming clear that our younger son, then in the 4th grade, was showing many of the same signs of struggling in reading comprehension and being able to get his thoughts down on paper in an effective manner. Not wanting him to struggle as long as my older son did, I immediately set him up for tutoring with Mrs. Pittman. She worked with him the last few months of the school year, over the summer, and has continued working with him in the 5th grade. We communicate regularly and she communicates with his teacher to see in what areas he may need additional assistance. She focuses primarily on reading comprehension and creative writing but when my son started struggling with some concepts he was learning in math, the one-on-one time with Mrs. Pittman made the difference.
A Step Ahead Tutoring has changed the atmosphere of homework time at our house. Mrs. Pittman’s tutoring style has not only helped both of my sons academically; she has also instilled in them a self-confidence that will carry them through their school years and beyond.
I whole-heartedly recommend A Step Ahead Tutoring to any parent who is looking for the academic assistance their child needs as well as the added blessing of tutors who feed the self-worth of a child with their warm and tender style and “can-do” spirit.
